A fracture is a break in a bone. The fracture often results in deformity if not treated accordingly. If the fracture is left to unite in a deformed state it will cause malunion thus reducing the function of affected limbs/joints.

Fracture management usually comprises internal fixation by which a plate is used with a screw on the bone or nails inserted inside the bone.

If there is a possible sign of infection, external fixation (pins and wires) is fixed outside of the bone and soft tissue.

Some fractures may heal well in a plaster of Paris (POP) but this comes at the cost of using it for months with no mobility or the affected joints until the fracture unites. For this reason, the patient may opt for surgical intervention with device fixation.
